Plain Language Act Repeal bill - you need to pay attention to this one!

How many of you know about the repeal of the Plain Language Act 2022?

I will be honest from the onset. I never knew this Act even existed. This morning, one of Reunite New Zealand’s committee members, Ray Bailey brought this to our attention. Thanks Ray! Once again no media mention, from anyone!

So what is the fuss about you may ask? Well, first we need to have a look at the Plain Language Act 2022. to see what it contains. It is short and concise. My main focus is the purpose of the Act.

Section 3, Plain Language Act 2022.

So, overall the average citizen would view this as a good piece of legislation promoting effectiveness and accountability of Public service agencies and Crown agents. Just as important is improving access to information to be made public. Many Official Information Act requests have been denied / refused and this will just make things worse. This is an onslaught on your right to accountability, transparency and the right to receive information.

Section 5, Plain Language Act 2022.

Well, they now want to repeal this Act. Why? I know you know too. They want to stifle your right to information and this repeal will remove their obligation to disclose their activities to you, the populace of NZ. In addition documents will now be filled with “legalese” and dog Latin which no-one understands which in itself is also unlawful! As for the removal of 5(a) above, would this have a further impact of the ideology and sexualisation of our kids which is prevalent across all schools?
